Chapter 21

Leonie

I watched Prospero as he went over to the restaurant counter. After our sessions at the start of the year I figured I could trust him to find something I liked to eat and I really didn’t want to go any further in. When Prospero told me we were going through the hospital itself, I’d been terrified but I hadn’t been able to say no to him. And I’d survived. So far.

The gardens were amazing and I wondered, if I’d known they were here and how to get to them, would I have been brave enough to try it? Would I be brave enough to come back, on my own? I had an idea there was far more to them than Prospero was showing me and I was longing to take the time to explore them in real depth. I was enjoying Prospero’s company too. Okay, he was bossy and thought he knew best but I’d won on the matter of the hats and he’d looked after me at breakfast time and he was working hard at making sure I felt safe and relaxed now. Which I did, I realised, as he came back with hot chocolate, fruit and muffins.

I decided to take the opportunity to ask Prospero about the nightmares, particularly when they might end.

“I don’t know,” he said heavily. “I'm sorry, Leonie, I just don't know. I've been researching it and I just can't find anything helpful. It's more Andrew’s area than mine but he can't come up with anything either.”

He'd already been looking for something to help me? I couldn't believe anyone would take that much trouble over me. I must have looked puzzled because he went on.

“There's a biological sex bias in Gifts. In males, Gifts tend to start to develop around sixteen or seventeen, the nightmares peak around nineteen or twenty, and then peter out by about twenty one. Male Gifts tend to be based around telekinesis – moving things – and pyrokinesis – setting fire to things – which is what makes their nightmares dangerous to others. Although a few may have telepathic or clairvoyant based Gifts, males practically never have these unless they already have one or more of the others.”

He paused and looked at me. “In females, the Gifts start to develop younger, maybe fifteen, and reach their peak around eighteen. But because their Gifts are normally those associated with telepathy or precognition, the nightmares only affect the dreamer and aren't dangerous to others. I can't find any records of females with your range and strength of Gifts at your age. There are a few who have telekinetic Gifts at fifteen which fade within a year or so, and a few who develop them later, after their other Gifts and that's it.”

He sighed and continued, “So I don't know whether yours will be over soon because you're female, or last longer because of what they are, or something in between. I'm sorry.”

I hadn't known about how gifts divided between male and female but that made a lot of things clearer.
